Municipality of South Bruce…"A Place for All Seasons"

mildmay damScenic villages, hamlets and countryside make this rural community, at the southern limits of Bruce County, an idyllic part of Ontario’s Natural Retreat. Cash crop, beef, dairy, sheep, swine, goat and fish farms sit tranquilly in a setting of rich land, rolling hills, woodlots, rivers and streams.

Within the amalgamated municipality of South Bruce, Mildmay, Teeswater, Formosa, the Township of Carrick and the Township of Culross have year round activities to capture the interest of everyone in the family.

Shop for gifts, crafts and antiques with the personal service characteristic of our friendly local shopkeepers. Enjoy a meal or snack in one of several casual dining establishments. Local talent is showcased all year long at community halls and arenas. Take in step dancing, clogging, singing, and old time musical performances. Guided tours of the historic Formosa Springs Brewery are available, year round, upon request.

Seasonal events make South Bruce a fun family destination, too. Spring brings with it the Formosa Toy Show and the traditional welcome to spring, the Annual Belmore Maple Syrup Festival. In early summer, the Antique Tractor Tour is held every Father’s Day. Autumn is celebrated at the Mildmay-Carrick and Teeswater-Culross Fall Fairs. At Hallowe’en, shiver in delighted fear at Teeswater’s Olde Spook Haus. Mildmay dons its Christmas finery at the Hanging of the Green, with its lighted night parade and sparkling Christmas light displays.

South Bruce boasts excellent recreational facilities whether your sport is hockey, curling, soccer or baseball. In the summer, take a refreshing dip in one of the outdoor pools. During the winter months, take the family skating at an indoor or outdoor skating rink. Walkers, cross country skiers and snowmobilers will love the extensive local and regional trails.

The peaceful rural atmosphere of South Bruce is a welcome change from the bustle of everyday city life. Pick up fresh produce, visit a maple sugar bush, outbid the highest bidder at an auction sale, go fishing or simply enjoy a scenic drive past golden fields during the harvest. Horse drawn buggies are common on these roads, too, as South Bruce is home to a thriving Mennonite community.

South Bruce, with its picturesque communities, churches of all denominations, artesian wells, water fountains, parks and rural landscapes, is a quiet retreat, for a day, a weekend or a longer vacation.
