Building Permit Fee Review

The Building Department is reviewing their current permit fees to have them increased for the 2023 building season. The Current permit fees have been in place and have not been updated since 2015. The Building Code Act allows for fee increases and states the following: The total amount of the fees authorized under clause (1) (c) must not exceed the anticipated reasonable costs of the principal authority to administer and enforce this Act in its area of jurisdiction. 2002, c. 9, s. 11 (2). [(BCA 7(2)].  

Staff have reviewed seven local Building Department fee schedules including West Grey, Owen Sound, Morris-Turnberry, Kincardine, Huron-Kinloss, Brockton and Howick. Taking each of these numbers we created an average fee for each category. Below is a summary by category, showing South Bruce's current fees in comparison to the averages of the other local Municipalities noted above, along with the proposed fee increases.

The Building Code Act requires that any fee changes be presented in a public meeting which was done at the Council Meeting on November 8, 2022 and that public comments and questions are taken into consideration before a decision in made.  This report will be brought back to Council for a decision on December 13, 2022.
